Are you one of the 10-15% of the worldwide population that suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (or IBS)?[1]
If so, you are probably frustrated and upset with a condition that means one day you can cope with your symptoms and the next day you experience a debilitating flare-up – not understanding why when you ate the exact same foods the day before.
If this sounds like you and you’re eager to find a long term solution to your IBS, then the positive results that many others have experienced using homeopathy might also appeal to you. In Homeopathy rather than simply “managing” your IBS or using medication to mask or control distressing symptoms, we aim to get to the root cause of the problem so you can enjoy long term lasting relief.
As one client explains:
“I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome” for at least 10 years. I had tried every form of treatment from medication to relaxation techniques, but nothing seemed to work. Homeopathy had been recommended to me, so I decided to give it a go. I was treated for 6 months and went once monthly to Eileen.
After the first 2 months of treatment, I started to feel better, having “good” days for most of the days in the week. By the 6th month, my good days had increased to 7 days a week and I was feeling better than I had done in years.
I would highly recommend Homeopathy. It helps you understand yourself, what works for you and what you need to manage in your life to improve your situation.” ND, Dublin 12
IBS is a condition that affects the large intestine. Those who suffer from IBS may experience cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhoea or constipation, or both. The exact cause of IBS is not known. A theory is that there is a disturbance in the way the gut, brain, and nervous system interact.[2] This can cause changes in normal bowel movement and sensation.
Women are twice as likely to have IBS as men and tend to notice an increase in symptoms around their monthly cycles. Therefore, it is suspected that hormonal changes are possibly a cause or trigger too.
Many IBS sufferers will say that it has taken years for them to be diagnosed, with some reporting that it took up to 6 years after their symptoms initially began. [3]
My clients will often say they feel very little can be done for them from a conventional perspective. Medications are often prescribed but may or may not help because IBS can be very unpredictable. Often the medications only palliate – either preventing diarrhoea OR constipation; reducing the cramps and spasms, or simply masking symptoms that affect the pain and discomfort in your gut.
Many people will opt to use over-the-counter medicines such as antispasmodics like Buscopan, laxatives for constipation or Imodium for diarrhoea relief. Researchers have found these drugs can help slow diarrhoea, but they won’t help with other IBS symptoms like stomach pain or swelling.[4] There’s also the issue of side effects to consider which can create another host of problems you could do without.
In homeopathy we recognise that everyone experiences their IBS symptoms differently. For example, one person might have diarrhoea, with sudden onset when anxious, or immediately after eating. Another person might have constipation and bloating with an ineffective urge for stool. One day you feel great but other days you may have terrible stomach upset and pain or bloating.
In homeopathy we treat the person and use natural remedies selected specifically to your needs to encourage your body back to a state of health and balance. Homeopathy does not just treat the localised symptoms but considers a person’s overall health in order to understand the full picture – the triggers, the lifestyle, your emotional make-up, stresses AND your physical symptoms. IBS, while diagnosed in a one-size-fits-all approach is not treated as such in homeopathy.
Over the long-term IBS can be very disruptive to your personal and professional life which can feel very restrictive, compounding stress and anxiety. IBS can lower your confidence, make you feel embarrassed and create anxiety around travel, holidays or social gatherings such as going out to dinner. It can also create great distress as many will worry about when a bathroom may be needed, whether an accident will happen or feel anxious about having to use a toilet in a public place. IBS is stressful and exhausting and can become a life of “can’t eat this and can’t eat that”, or “I can’t go there, nor do this or that.”
The triggers for IBS vary from person to person and can include stress, anxiety, lifestyle changes or personal loss. IBS may also worsen due to eating specific foods. Some will suffer despite having a great diet; some may have been tested for food intolerances and given up a list of foods to no avail, and some will have a very clear aggravating response to a particular food. A homeopathic treatment plan that I prescribe specifically for you, works on improving your digestive system while simultaneously reducing triggers and aggravating factors. As well as that, it aims to lower the stress and anxiety reactions in your life.
