The Flu season is here again! As advised by the HSE, antibiotics don’t work for the cold and flu so what can you do when the illness strikes?
Prevention is always better than cure so a boost with Homeopathy to reduce your susceptibility to catching the flu and improving your natural defences is the first step. However, if you are unlucky enough to fall ill, Homeopathy offers a safe and natural way to tackle the symptoms.
Bold type is where the emphasis of this particular remedy lies.
Flu symptoms appear slowly over a period of 6-12 hours and the person feels heavy, tired and sleepy. They want to lie perfectly still as any movement, even the smallest motion hurts. They are irritable (like a bear with a sore head) and they don’t wish to talk preferring to be left alone. The mouth is dry with a dirty white-coated tongue and lips are chapped which can crack or bleed. Thirst is for large quantities of water with long intervals in between. They are restless from discomfort as no position provides relief. Throbbing headaches are relieved by applying firm pressure to sore points and become worse for talking, stooping or any motion. They have a desire for air and cool temperatures. The cough is painful and they will hold their hand firmly to the chest to minimise movement.
Flu symptoms come on slowly with an achy, sore heavy feeling in the muscles and the person feels weary, drowsy, lethargic, apathetic and too exhausted to complain. The eyelids feel droopy and are hard to keep open and they just wish to sleep and be left alone. With great weakness, there is trembling – in the hands, the tongue, the knees or possibly the entire body. Even though they have an intensely dry mouth and lips, they have little thirst as if too tired to bother to drink. They complain of chills up and down the spine and they are sensitive to cold. They are clammy with the fever with hot and cold alternating or fever with trembling. (Bryonia lies in bed as any motion aggravates, Gelesenium lies in bed more so from fatigue).
This flu is felt in the bones and sufferers will complain that their bones feel broken, aching, bruised or dislocated. The onset is quite quick and every part of the body hurts – the headache is a pulsating pressure which feels as heavy as lead, the eyeballs are sore, the throat is hoarse especially in the morning and all symptoms are aggravated by coughing or sneezing. While coughing they will hold their chest and they feel as if the pain is in the ribs too. At times they may get on their hands and knees to cough. Gastric symptoms are common with vomiting of green bile and bouts of flatulence. They have severe chills and fevers. They have an insatiable thirst for very cold water before and during a chill and may feel nausea from cold drinks. There is violent sneezing with a streaming nose and they are worse for movement and cold air. They moan and complain about their pains and feel quite depressed.
Flu symptoms usually start in the middle of the night especially between 1-2 am and can often flare up at this time each night. The sufferers become rapidly exhausted, restless and agitated and they are often fearful of the illness. There are frequent bouts of painful sneezing with a watery burning discharge making the lips and nostrils sore. The eyes feel burning with a hot lachrymation and the cough is dry wheezy and tight which is worse at night and better for sitting up for relief. They are cold and cannot get warm and may complain of a hot head and cold body. Chills and fevers are intense with feelings of ice-cold waves or hot boiling water flowing through their veins. With gastric symptoms, the sight or smell of food upsets them, and there may be simultaneous vomiting and diarrhoea. They are thirsty for small sips frequently and all symptoms are better for warmth, (except the headache which is better for fresh air).
Practical measures if you have the flu include plenty of rest, drink fluids and eat nourishing foods. If you have a serious underlying illness or are worried, be sensible and discuss with your doctor to put your mind at rest.
