Many of the women I work with say they have never felt right since coming off the pill. In fact, many describe their experience as nothing short of a nightmare.
One of the reasons women initially are put on the pill is to “regulate” periods, whether they be irregular, heavy or painful. Others have been prescribed the pill to treat symptoms of PMS, acne, headaches, mood swings or other hormonal issues. The pill has become a catch-all solution for all things hormonal.
On the surface, the pill seems to “help” these symptoms as the problems are now “managed”. But it does not get to the root of the imbalance or offer a true resolution. It’s like a band-aid effect.
What happens for many women when they stop taking the pill, is that the symptoms they experienced before going on it, now return, and sometimes worse than before.
Problems that arise when coming off the pill include:
Essentially, the pill is composed of synthetic hormones taken to prevent pregnancy. It replaces a normal menstrual cycle with an artificial cycle. By altering your normal hormonal feedback loop, the brain no longer sends a signal to your ovaries to release an egg and you stop ovulating. Since the pill stops your brain and ovaries from communicating, it’s not surprising that you may experience problems in re-establishing that communication if you stop taking it.
To illustrate this, I’d like to share the cases of two women who came to see me, each with different but common problems as their bodies tried to readjust to life off the pill.
My first client had experienced distressing symptoms on the pill which had become even more debilitating since she stopped taking it.
At our first appointment, she explained:
“Since starting a different pill 13 months ago (with many changes of pills before that) I haven’t felt myself. I’ve been emotionally volatile and fragile. I’ve gained weight and the bloating is so bad. It stops me from wearing certain clothes, I look pregnant and I feel embarrassed.
I came off the Pill 8 weeks ago and my period has been debilitating. It was heavy and I felt lethargic and in constant pain. I found it difficult to get through daily tasks and concentrate. The mood swings are bad again and I feel tense. Anything sets me off. As soon as I eat I blow up like a balloon. The PMS mood swings are back too.
In our follow-up appointment, 3 weeks after starting her homeopathic remedies, she described the changes:
“I found the remedies brilliant. It’s been incredible.
I got my period one week after starting the remedy and didn’t even know I had it. The usual symptoms were non-existent. No cramps, no PMS, no bloating, no moodiness and no excruciating pain.
I’d normally look heavily pregnant with the usual bloating and I noticed such a huge difference. I had no constipation and no water retention.
I feel less emotional. I feel so much better in myself and I’m not self-conscious. I feel calmer, lighter and I have more energy. I have a sense of well-being now.
I have never done homeopathy before, and I am so glad I chose to do it. “

When Sue came to see me, she had come off the pill 3 months earlier.
Having been diagnosed with PCOS at 15 years old, she was prescribed the contraceptive pill and had been on it for 10 years. This kept “unruly” symptoms under control, but once she stopped, the “imbalance” showed itself once again. But this time with more complaints.
Since stopping the pill she suffered from mood swings, severe bloating, water retention, sugar cravings, hot flushes, brain fog, ‘hangry’, and more.
As Sue explained:
“I came off the pill 3 months ago and I was like a crazy person. I thought, ‘what have I done?’. This is the worst decision ever. I don’t feel like myself at all. My mental health is suffering as I feel very out of sorts. I feel I should be pregnant as I am so bloated and swollen.
Two weeks later after taking her homeopathic remedy, she told me:
“I am feeling normal again. I feel calm. I feel settled and relaxed all the time now.
My moods have completely stabilised and I feel so normal again.
I can control my emotions much more easily.
The bloating has eased and the swollen ankles, face and joints have gone.
The daily hot flushes have stopped.
I’m not craving food or sugar. My world revolved around food but I’m not overly bothered now. I don’t need sugar or chocolate ‘RIGHT NOW’ and it’s much more manageable.
I feel lighter, lighthearted and things are not getting to me.
I feel much happier.
I am so happy with my decision to use homeopathy. I have taken the right steps in getting back to me.
I’m over the moon with my results so far, honestly so happy I found you!

We still have some work to do but what a great start in balancing her hormones naturally!
Many women come off the pill either because of their age, the side effects they had whilst on the pill or because they want to become pregnant. For the latter, many can find it hard to conceive. Their periods may be missing, cycles may be irregular or they face multiple miscarriages.
Homeopathy offers a wealth of support in regulating your hormones naturally, detoxing the effects of the pill and helping your body re-establish its natural cycle and rhythms.
