Are you plagued with prickly heat or a heat rash during the summer months?
Are you afraid it is going to spoil your holiday or make the sunny weather unbearable for you?
Or does the itchy, irritated rash mean you need to keep your skin covered up or stay indoors while everyone else is soaking up the glorious sunshine?
If this is familiar to you, then the good news is that there is a way to put an end to prickly heat ruining your summer. Homeopathy not only can provide rapid relief when the rash is active, but it can also address the root cause long term preventing its recurrence naturally.
Prickly heat also known as miliaria rubra is a common ailment suffered by many sun travellers and it can leave more than your skin prickling as you attempt to cope with these very uncomfortable symptoms.
Prickly heat is generally brought on by overheating and sweating in a hot, humid environment. The rash of tiny red itchy spots is caused by blockage of the sweat pores which is largely confined to the covered areas of the body. The rash is itchy, stings or feels prickly, with tiny blisters on a red base. Itching can also become more apparent during or after exercise. The prickly sensation is due to inflammation caused by bursting of sweat gland ducts blocked by sebum.
Prevention is better than cure, so if you are prone to prickly heat each year, it is advisable to seek “constitutional treatment” to address the root of the problem and improve your natural immune response. This means understanding the complaint in relation to your whole health rather than just viewing the symptoms in isolation. You can read more on this here.
If your prickly heat has already started or you would like a remedy to take with you on holiday, there are “acute” homeopathic remedies that can be used to bring rapid relief naturally.
As there are many possible remedies to choose from, it is best to see a homeopath to find one most suitable for you.
Here are a few examples of remedies to explain why different remedies are chosen based on individual symptoms.
Apis: Skin feels hot with raised, red, shiny eruptions that feel worse for the heat and better for cool bathing – (looks shiny like a bee sting).
Rhus Tox: Burning or extreme itching rash with small blisters and restlessness. Skin feels worse for cold air and better for heat.
Urtica urens: The rash is red with raised blotches that sting, burn and itch. Skin feels worse for cold bathing and better for rubbing -(looks like nettle rash).
Urtica urens cream or tincture can also be applied topically to help relieve the itch.
Seek help if the irritation is intolerable and there is accompanying weakness and lethargy.
Do not use perfumes, scented soap or bubble baths, wear light cotton clothing and avoid sun exposure until your skin has healed.
